The Engagement

She is sitting there thinking about the day he asked her to marry him. He had the whole day planned out in advance. He was like a little kid all morning impatient to get the day started.

Ever since they fell in love they knew they would be husband and wife, they talked about it all the time. He always wanted to talk about being married, he couldn't wait. His eyes would light up, his smile from ear to ear when he spoke of their future together. She felt the same way, she couldn't stand not being married to him, waiting patiently to call him her husband.

They both worked hard saving as much as they could to put money aside for the wedding. She told him she didn't need a big giant engagement ring, it was not her style. He knew she wanted a ring which was different, somewhat antique not the traditional engagement ring. He later told her he had so much fun picking out the perfect ring for her.

He almost could not stand having it in the house, wanting to give it to her everyday. Once he had it in his hands, he wanted to slip it on her finger yet he also wanted to give her the best day to remember this milestone event.

He hated doing anything without her involvement, everything they did they planned together. This though he knew he had to plan on his own.

When she thinks back to the day she can hear what is left of her heart shatter a tiny bit more. She can see in her mind so clearly how utterly excited he was, waiting for the excitement to begin. She can't stay in the memory for long though, it is to painful for her. Tears always stream down her face as she remembers him down on one knee.

The morning of the engagement he surprised her be announcing they were going into the city for the day. It was June so the weather was warm, although the morning was a bit cloudy she was hesitant of the plans for the day thinking it might rain. She wasn't so thrilled with the thought of them sightseeing in the city in the rain but he was insistent they go, she not knowing what was going to occur finally agreed. After thinking on it she thought it would be fun rain or shine, their little adventure.

They drove into the city laughing and joking along the way. Him pointing out places from his past, telling her the stories of his colorful times. They were spending the whole day in the city so they brought a change of clothes for dinner. She thought they would most likely leave mid afternoon but he knew the real plans. He had already made dinner reservations at a steakhouse they both wanted to go to.

They decided to park in a central location, traveling around the city by taxi or train. She remembers thinking it was an adventure they were embarking on, an adventure with the best ending.

They walked the High Line looking at all the art work along the way, stopping to take pictures as they always did. He loved taking her picture and pictures together. She is so grateful he did, she has thousand of pictures to look at, remembering every single place they went to together.

They decided to head back to the car so they could change for dinner. He hadn't told her he had made reservations, she thought they were going to play it by ear. She asked him where they were going to change. After a few minutes they figured out the only place to change was in the car. They were laughing and giggling as they took turns changing in the car. At their age, they never thought they would be changing in a NYC parking garage but it was fun. Anything they did was fun.

They had an amazing steak dinner, he finally admitted to having bought tickets to go up the 102nd floor of the Empire State Building. She was excited, having never been there, neither of them had. Walking into the building was amazing to her, she loved the architecture of it. They unfortunately had to wait in a long line but they spent the time talking about the day. Along the way, they stopped to read all the history that was posted.

Unbeknownst to her, they knew he was proposing. As soon as they were at a certain spot they were ushered into the old rickety elevator up to the top observation deck. As she was gazing out the window, awe struck by the view he had quickly asked someone to take pictures. He tapped her shoulder and as she was turning around he got down on one knee. They were surrounded by people, it was shoulder to shoulder yet to her they were all by themselves, everything around them was blurred out in her mind as he asked her to be his wife.

He could have not planned a better day to ask her to marry him. They road down the elevator in total bliss excited to begin their journey as husband and wife.
